Academies: A Vision For Tomorrow

 

John A. Ferguson is pleased to be one of Dade County's Career Magnet Schools under the I-Choose grant initiative. The Magnet Program consists of six career academies, each with its own selection of strands, and each following a rigorous scope and sequence.

What are Academies?

Academies are small learning communities within a school that draw on the interests of students in
career-related subjects . Studies have shown that students who participate in the academy model are more motivated to continue to post- secondary education. 

Academies prepare students for post-secondary education and careers through academic learning and
hands-on work experiences within a theme-based, contextualized curriculum. Students are exposed to broad career opportunities in the work force so that they can make sound choices for the future.  Each academy is connected to interested employers in the community who provide the school with technical support, advisory board members, speakers, field trip hosts, mentors, and internships.
